Northwestern Leads Hawaii

HONOLULU, Hawaii, December 19. THE Northwestern men lead Hawaii, 129-54, in their training trip dual meet after Tuesday's swimming events. The meet will conclude Wednesday with the diving competitions. Additionally, the Wildcats lead the Rainbow Wahine, 122-75.

The quartet of Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial), Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) and Jimmy Sourbeer (Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) opened the meet with a time of 1:30.87 to win the 200 medley relay.

Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) then won the 1,000 free with a 9:23.72 before Grevers captured the 200 free with a 1:40.96.

Bruno Barbic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) and Bubolz swept the top two spots in the 50 free, with Barbic turning in a 20.67 and Bubolz swimming a 20.81.

Alexandrov led a Wildcat sweep of the top four spots in the 200 IM with a 1:53.59 before Bubolz came out on top of the 100 fly with a 50.01.

Barbic earned his second win of the meet with a 45.91 to win the 100 free, while Grevers won his second with a 49.93 in the 100 back. Nilsson made it three Wildcats in a row with two victories, earning first in the 500 free with a 4:31.37.

Alexandrov continued the double-victory formula with a 57.26 to win the 100 breast. Barbic, Nilsson, Jon Ehret (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) and Adam Beckman (Kearney, Neb./Kearney) concluded Tuesday's action with a 1:24.71 to win the 200 free relay.

In the women's meet, two 'Cats turned in NCAA 'B' standard swims in the meet, impressive considering the rigorous work regimine the team has put in so far during the trip. Freshman Emily Wong (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's) won the 50 free with a 'B' time of 23.41 and captured the 100 free with a 'B' effort of 50.12, while classmate Jenn Kocsis (Omaha, Neb./Marian) came out on top of the 500 free with a 'B' cut of 4:52.78.

The meet began with a Northwestern win in the 200 medley relay. Genny Szymanski (Haines, Alaska/Haines), Jessie Bailis (Omaha, Neb./Millard North), Katie Braun (Edina, Minn./Edina) and Hayley Fry (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) comprised the relay that finished in 1:45.18.

Freshmen Kassia Shishkoff (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School) and Mary Beth Francis (San Diego, Calif./Mission Viejo) then finished second and third, respectively, in the 1000 free before junior Andrea Hupman (Lawrenceville, Ga./Brookwood) grabbed the top spot in the 200 free with a 1:50.76.

Bailis finished second to Wong in the 50 free with a 24.15, then four 'Cats took second through fifth in the 200 IM. Braun and Stacy Congdon (Windermere, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) followed with a 1-2 sweep of the 100 fly. Braun swam a 56.31 and Congdon turned in a 57.57.

Hupman was second to Wong in the 100 free with a 51.18, before Szymanski took second in the 100 back with a 58.81. Shishkoff took second in the 500 free behind Kocsis with a 4:55.75.

Bailis, Fry and Jill Forster (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) completed a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 breast. Bailis swam a 1:04.20, Fry had a 1:05.17 and Forster turned in a 1:09.30.
