Missouri State Retains Lead in Second Day of Delta State Invite

CLEVELAND, Mississippi, December 17. THE Bears' swimmers and divers remain in control of the annual Delta State Invitational after Sunday's day two of competition in Cleveland, Mo. The Missouri State men claimed two individual first-place finishes and one relay championship to total 632 points at the conclusion of this evening's competition. Tampa remains in second place with 519 points and Delta State is in third with 418. On the women's side of the meet, the Bears lead with 628 points, followed by Tampa with 601.5 and Delta State with 534.5 points.

Sophomore Vic Riffel claimed the first gold medal on the evening for the Bears. The Wichita, Kan., native earned first place in the 400 IM in a time of 4:06.81.

Senior Greg Temple grabbed first place in the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall in 56.67.

The MSU men ended day two of the meet with the top finish in the 800 freestyle relay. Ryan Bullock, J.R. Pyle, Andrew McBride and Jess Lund combined for a time of 6:51.59.

In the women's competition, the 100 backstroke proved to be a very tight race between Bears' sophomore Jordan Hawkins and senior teammate Allison Zeller. Hawkins stopped the clock first at 58.55 with Zeller finishing in 58.56 to give Missouri State the one-two finish and the lone individual win in second day events.

Hawkins also swam the third leg of the Bears' winning 800 freestyle relay. She joined Matana Wellman, Andi Rojas and Breanna Hollar to earn the win in 7:44.81.

The Delta State Invitational concludes on Monday, Dec. 18, with preliminary competition at 10 a.m., and finals scheduled for 4 p.m.
