Ziegler Takes Down American Record in 1,000 Freestyle

FAIRFAX, Virginia, December 11. KATE Ziegler, America's distance sensation, broke her second American record of the Tom Dolan Invitational on Sunday night as she motored through the 1,000-yard freestyle in an almost unfathomable time of 9:21.57. That effort obliterated Ziegler's American mark of 9:24.80, set last year in the same pool at George Mason University.

A member of The Fish and coached by Ray Benecki, Ziegler set a record Thursday in the 1,650 free, bettering a long-standing mark of Janet Evans. In the longer race, Ziegler was timed in 15:37.17. The reigning world champ in the 800 and 1,500 freestyles, Ziegler appears ready to duplicate that double-gold performance when she races at the 2007 World Champs in Melbourne in March.
