Widener, Washington Split

CHESTERTOWN, Maryland, November 28. VISITING Widener University won six of 11 events en route to a 117-88 non-conference men's swimming victory over host Washington College this evening at Casey Swim Center. The Pioneers improved to 2-1 with the win, while the Shoremen slipped to 3-2 with the loss. The Washington College women's team improved to 4-2 this season with a 141-60 win. Junior Megan Morse (Easton, MD/Sts. Peter & Paul) and senior Liz Shoemaker (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) recorded two individual first-place finishes for the Shorewomen, who won 10 of 11 events. The Pioneers captured the 100 freestyle for their lone victory of the evening

In men's action, senior Colin Soper (Towson, MD/Loyola Blakefield) won two individual events for Washington, taking the 200 freestyle in a WC season-best time of 1:48.21 and the 500 freestyle in 5:01.53. Freshman Chris Soper (Towson, MD/Loyola Blakefield) added a win in the 100 freestyle in 50.93, while junior Alex Thomas (Towson, MD/Calvert Hall) won the 200 breaststroke in a WC season-best time of 2:19.17.

Soper, freshman Justin Morgan (Colonia, NJ/St. Joseph), sophomore Dan Wentzel (Exton, PA/Henderson), and junior Brandon Becker (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks East) finished first in the 200 freestyle relay in a WC season-best time of 1:32.27. Soper led off that relay with a WC season-best 50 freestyle time of 22.57.

Chris Soper, Thomas, and freshman Dylan Pollock (Savannah, GA/Benedictine Military) each recorded one individual second-place finish for the Shoremen. Chris Soper was second in the 50 freestyle in 23.12, Pollock was second in the 200 butterfly in 2:05.68, and Thomas was second in the 200 individual medley in 2:07.50.

Morgan was third in both the 50 freestyle (23.42) and the 100 freestyle (51.51), while Becker was third in the 20 backstroke (2:14.36), Pollack was third in the 500 freestyle (5:14.39), and freshman Dan Beadell (Timonium, MD/Loyola Blakefield) took third in the 1000 freestyle (11:04.33)..

For the women, Morse won the 200 individual medley in 2:18.77 and the 500 freestyle in 5:30.07. Shoemaker captured the 200 freestyle in 2:04.87 and the 200 backstroke in 2:15.19.

Sophomore Andrea Cole (Felton, DE/Caesar Rodney), and freshmen Kathy Gerhart (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area), Amy Smith (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area) and Liz Thomas (Towson, MD/Notre Dame Prep) each won one individual event. Cole won the 200 breaststroke in 2:39.77, Gerhart took the 200 butterfly in 2:17.73, Smith was tops in the 1000 freestyle in 11:31.87, and Thomas grabbed the 50 freestyle in 26.03.

Smith became the eighth fastest swimmer ever at Washington College in the 200 backstroke in 2:16.01.

Shoemaker, Thomas, and seniors Ally Simons (Camp Hill, PA/Cumberland Valley) and Caitlin Auger (McLean, VA/McLean) won the 400 medley relay in 4:17.72. Freshman Caitlin Eisele (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township), Gerhart, Simons and Morse captured the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.46.
