At the halfway point Teuscher had only a slight lead over Corrie Murphy of USC and Keegan Walkley of Georgia, but distanced herself during the breaststroke. No one was going to come close to the 400m Free champion as she pulled away in freestyle to win in 4:33.81, a bit short of the 4:29.00 world record held by Guohong Dai of China. Murphy placed second (4:37.77), and Maggie Bowen of Auburn finished strong for third while Walkley paid for her early speed and faded to seventh.
