West Des Moines Valley High Rewrites Relay State Record Books in Iowa State High School Victory

By Jason Marsteller

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa, November 13. WEST Des Moines Valley High took home the Iowa State High School Girls Swimming and Diving Championship, held at the Marshalltown YMCA from Nov. 3-4.

Overall, WDMV cruised with 355 total points, while Marshalltown High placed second with 160 points. Ankeny finished third with 159 points, while Pleasant Valley High took fourth with 134 points and Cedar Falls High grabbed fifth with 131 points.

A pair of state records went down during the meet as WDMV performed well in relays.

The WDMV foursome of Lisa Nathanson, Alexa Mehesan, Kelsey Galles and McKensie Carr ripped off a state record in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a 1:36.19. That time erased the 1:37.55 previously set by Cedar Falls High 10 years ago in 1996.

WDMV came back with another relay state record in the 400-yard freestyle relay when Mehesan, Nathanson, Johanna Wubbena and Carr hit the wall in 3:32.65. That performance edged the 3:32.69 recorded by WDMV last year.

Three swimmers doubled up in individual races. Nathanson started with a win in the 200 free in 1:54.40, before capturing the 100 free in 51.98. Her teammate Mehesan touched first in the 50 free in 23.87 before claiming the 100 fly in the following event with a 56.82. Ankeny's Jaryn Studer closed out the trio with a deuce in the 100 breast (1:05.66) and 200 IM (2:09.32)

On the diving side, Veronica Rydze of Iowa City High won the one-meter with 495.70 points. That total put Rydze up by more than 100 points for the title.
