Meet of the Week: UC San Diego Sweeps Cal State Bakersfield

SAN DIEGO, California, November 11. UC San Diego came out victorious with a pair of triumphs against Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday. First, the men dominated en route to a 142.5-98.5 conquest. Meanwhile, UCSD's women topped CSUB, 127-104.

Women's 400-yard medley relay
UCSD grabbed a 13-4 lead in the 400 medley relay. The UCSD contingent of Susan Bell, Kendall Bohn, Karla Holman and Emily Harlan touched in a Division II automatic-qualifying time of 3:56.02 for the win. Meanwhile, CSUB's team of Erin Craft, Simone Swanepoel, Niki Peck and Jennifer Ward placed second in 4:02.06. UCSD's B team of Tori Edmiston, Jenna Muenter, Jennifer Sims and Katie Baier placed third in 4:02.96.

Notably, Bell's leadoff time of 58.58 nearly cleared the DII 100 back A cut, but wound up provisionally qualifying her for the pinnacle meet.

Men's 400-yard medley relay
San Diego vaulted to a 15-2 lead with a 1-2 finish in the 400 medley relay. The team of Devin Ancona, Evan Hsiao, Jesse Marin and Tim Fuller touched first in 3:28.95, while the B squad of Steven Hardy, Jake Dong, Kelvin Le and Artur Kubalski stopped the clock in 3:32.61 for second. Bakersfield's foursome of Cal Ladd, Justine Burdine, Brian Berry and Chase Kreitler finished second in 3:41.76.

Women's 1000-yard freestyle
CSUB cut the gap to 20-16 in the distance free with a 1-3 finish. Astrid Amsallem won the race in 10:30.66, while teammate Vicky Dinan placed third in 11:05.83. UCSD's Andrea Lippin split the difference with a second-place time of 10:38.09 that cleared the provisional DII standard in the event.

Men's 1000-yard freestyle
CSUB dropped the lead to 21-15 with a 1-3 effort in the 1000 free. Chase Sheldon hit the wall first in 9:57.67, while teammate Zach Benson placed third in 10:05.81. UCSD's Greg Goodell took second in 10:00.72.

Women's 200-yard freestyle
Bakersfield took a 30-25 lead in the 200 free with another 1-3 effort. Astrid Amsallem dominated the field with a 1:54.98 to claim the title, while teammate Leah Felber placed third in 1:57.12. San Diego's Susan Bell notched another DII qualifier with a B-cut time of 1:57.11 for second place.

Men's 200-yard freestyle
San Diego extended its lead to 35-20 with a 1-3 finish of its own in the 200 free. Tim Fuller posted a DII B-cut time of 1:42.77 to win, while teammate Jake Dong placed third in 1:45.59. CSUB's Sampo Sissala split the difference with a second-place 1:43.65.

Women's 50-yard freestyle
UCSD countered in the 50 free with a top-two sweep to retake the lead, 40-34. Emily Harlan posted a DII B-cut to win in 24.19, while teammate Liz Whiteley took second in 25.16. CSUB's Jennifer Ward rounded out the top three in 25.44.

Men's 50-yard freestyle
UCSD kept it going en route to a 46.5-27.5 lead. Dan Perdew nearly notched a DII B-cut with a first-place time of 21.55. Bakersfield took 2-3 when Piotr Gegotek touched second in 21.85 and Justine Burdine tied for third with UCSD's Todd Langland in 22.05.

Women's 200-yard IM
San Diego stretched its lead to 51-42 in the 200 IM. Shannon Simonds touched first in 2:11.90 to provisionally qualify for DII NCAAs, while CSUB went 2-3. Lexi Kelly placed second in 2:14.63, while Niki Peck finished third in 2:14.65.

Men's 200-yard IM
San Diego remained in the lead, 55.5-37.5, after the 200 IM. CSUB's Alexy Belyy finished first in 1:57.82, while UCSD rounded out the top three. Steven took second in 1:58.44, while Dan Gluvers placed third in 2:00.73.

Women's One-meter diving
Bakersfield's Meliane Sloan kept it a nine-point difference at 60-51 with 197.85 points for the win. UCSD's Jennifer Lappe grabbed second with 194.85 points, while Nicole Stasio placed third with 186.68 points.

Men's One-meter diving
San Diego moved out to a 69.5-41.5 advantage in the diving break. Andrew Skewes captured the title for UCSD with 252.53 points, while his teammate Jeff Bryant placed third with 223.43 points. Evan Crocker split the difference for CSUB with 250.80 points.

Women's 200-yard butterfly
San Diego pushed its advantage to 73-57 in the 200 fly with a top-two sweep. Karla Holman punched her ticket DII NCAAs with a 2:07.39, while teammate Jennifer Sims posted a B-cut 2:09.59 for second. Niki Peck closed out the top three for CSUB in 2:10.55.

Men's 200-yard butterfly
San Diego stretched its lead to 82.5-47.5 in the 200 fly. Kelvin Le provisionally qualified for DII NCAAs in 1:55.41 for the win, while CSUB's Sampo Sissala took second in 1:55.73. UCSD also picked up third with a 1:55.91 from Jesse Marin.

Women's 100-yard freestyle
UCSD grabbed a 21-point lead, 85-64, after the 100 free. Emily Harlan stopped the clock with a B-cut time of 52.93 for the win. CSUB's Simone Swanepoel (54.01) and Leah Felber (54.18) took second and third.

Men's 100-yard freestyle
San Diego kept the pressure on to take a 95.5-53.5 advantage. Tim Fuller clocked a DII B-cut time of 46.10 for the win, while teammate Dan Perdew finished third in 47.83. Piotr Gegotek took second for CSUB in 47.40.

Women's 200-yard backstroke
Bakersfield chipped the lead down to 93-75 in the 200 back. Erin Craft touched first in 2:10.46, while UCSD picked up the next two spots. Aubrey Panis finished second in 2:12.04, while Tori Edmiston took third in 2:13.64.

Men's 200-yard backstroke
San Diego took a commanding 111.5-56.5 lead with a top-three sweep of the 200 back. Devin Ancona touched first in 1:56.15, while Steven Hardy (1:57.34) and Kelvin Le (1:59.82) took second and third, respectively.

Women's 500-yard freestyle
CSUB closed to within 11, 99-88, after the middle distance event. Astrid Amsallem won another crown in 5:09.96, while teammate Joelle Johnson placed third in 5:15.36. Shannon Simonds registered a DII B-cut time of 5:10.09 for UCSD.

Men's 500-yard freestyle
Bakersfield battled back in the 500 free to cut the lead to 118.5-68.5. Alexy Belyy won in 4:42.87, while teammate Chase Sheldon placed third in 4:51.06. Artur Kubalski split the difference for UCSD in 4:46.87.

Women's Three-meter diving
Meliane Sloan made it a diving sweep for CSUB with 201.10 points. Meanwhile, Jennifer Lappe (185.63) and Amanda Mason (175.05) finished 2-3 for UCSD. At the end of the event, San Diego led 108-97.

Men's Three-meter diving
San Diego took a 127.5-77.5 advantage in the second diving break, although CSUB's Evan Crocker won with 267.83 points. San Diego's Andrew Skewes (217.20) and Daniel Gordh (200.33) placed second and third, respectively.

Women's 200-yard breaststroke
UCSD responded with a monster 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 breast to take a 124-100 advantage. Kendall Bohn stopped the clock first with a DII B-cut time of 2:23.56, while Emily Starkie (2:31.17) and Cari Cunningham (2:31.33) rounded out the top three.

Men's 200-yard breaststroke
UCSD remained in the lead, 136.5-87.5, after the 200 breast. Alexy Belyy hit the wall first for CSUB in 2:08.79, while Jake Dong (2:10.18) and Evan Hsiao (2:10.72) rounded out the top three for San Diego.

Women's 400-yard freestyle relay
San Diego closed out the win, 127-104, with a 1-3 performance in the 400 free relay. Its team of Liz Whiteley, Shannon Simonds, Aubrey Panis and Susan Bell won in 3:36.28, while CSUB's foursome of Leah Felber, Joelle Johnson, Jennifer Ward and Simone Swanepoel took second in 3:37.71. UCSD's contingent of Jennifer Sims, Danielle Warren, Karla Holman and Rose Cohen completed team scoring with a third-place 3:47.01.

Men's 400-yard freestyle relay
San Diego finished the sweep with a 142.5-98.5 win with a 2-3 finish in the 400 free relay. Bakersfield's team of Piotr Gegotek, Sampo Sissala, Avery Wickham and Fillip Zemier stopped the clock first in 3:10.74, while UCSD's A team of Todd Langland, Dan Perdew, Devin Ancona and Jesse Marin took second in 3:10.76.
