Wyoming Sweeps Denver

LARAMIE, Wyoming, November 10. THE Wyoming swimming and diving team had a great night as the Cowboys edged Denver 125-118 and the Cowgirls beat the Pioneers 138-100, Friday night at Corbett Pool. With the win the Cowgirls improve to 2-0 and the Cowboys pick up a win in their first dual of the season. Denver's men fall to 4-3 and their women fall to 3-3.

"This was a great team effort on both sides," said veteran UW swimming and diving coach Tom Johnson. "This is a big win for us. Denver is a good team and we are proud to get past them. It is great to get a couple of W's and to be on that winning track heading into a huge dual tomorrow against TCU."

The Cowboys won five events on the day, including the 200 medley relay. In that relay, Sam Shook, Alex Larkin, Ron Fogel and Vinny Crispino swam a time of 1:35.58, edging out Denver by just over three tenths of a second.

All four of UW's individual first place finishes came from different Cowboys and all four came from UW's sophomore class. Eli Bell won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:43.41, Sam Shook won the 200 IM in a time of 1:56.88, Matt Urich won the 100 butterfly in 51.57 and Alex Larkin sealed the dual win in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.31.

The Cowgirls had a bit of an easier time as they won ten of 13 events on the night. The Cowgirl relay teams led the team to the dual win, winning both relay events. Rachel Leyes, Erin Spadinger, Heidi Thorson and Cassie Stelow won the 200 medley relay by swimming to a time of 1:47.47. Aimee Stinson, Katie Bigger, Krista Jones and Tamara Lehnertz swam the fastest time in the 400 freestyle relay, touching the wall in 3:39.60.

Individually, Saara Haapanen, Tamara Lehnertz and Erin Spadinger led the Cowgirls with two first place finishes each. Haapanen won both boards of diving, finishing with a score of 274.05 in the 1-meter event and a score of 281.78 in 3-meter. Lehnertz won both the 100 and 200 freestyles, touching the wall in respective times of 54.07 and 1:55.88. Spadinger won the 200 IM in a time of 2:11.49 and the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:06.37. Other Cowgirls winning individual events included Aimee Stinson in the 1000 freestyle (10:37.96) and Heidi Thorson in the 100 butterfly (51.57)
