Brown Defeats Cornell, 191-104

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island, November 4. TAKING 11 first-place finishes in 16 events, the Brown women's swimming and diving team won its season opener at Smith Swim Center on Saturday, 191-104. Senior Ashley Wallace (Chatham, NJ) took home three firsts for the Bears, one as a part of the 200-yard medley relay and the other two in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly. Diver Dana Meadow (Chicago, IL) qualified for Zones with her score of 262.80 at one meter.

The Bears got off to a fantastic start, placing first in the first eight events of the day en route to the easy win. The 200-yard medley team of Wallace, senior Emily Brush (Duxbury, MA), junior Alexandra Wyatt (Ypsilanti, MI), and freshman Susannah Ford (Cambridge, MA) won with a time of 1:51.10 to start things off. All four swimmers later won individual events. In addition to Wallace's two butterfly wins, Brush won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:08.77, Wyatt won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.96, and Ford won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.33. Wyatt also finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Meadow picked up an easy win in one-meter diving, as her score was 16 points higher than any other competitor. She took second in the three-meter dive to teammate Amy Latinen (Fenton, MI), who had taken third in one meter. Freshman Katie Olko (Harrison, NY) finished second in one-meter diving.

Sophomore Ainsley McFadgen (Glace Bay, NS) also had two individual wins. She won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:56.60, then later won the 500-yard free with a time of 5:08.41, a full 18 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher from Cornell. Junior Dillon Delaney (West Barnstable, MA) and senior Lauren Harlow (Andover, MA) took first and second, respectively, in the 1,000-yard freestyle.
