Meet of the Week: No. 3 Texas Shines in Double-Dual Win Over No. 4 California, No. 12 Indiana

PHOENIX, Arizona, November 4. NO. 3 Texas finished off No. 4 California and No. 12 Indiana in a SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Meet of the Week on Saturday. Texas posted winning scores over Cal (204-165) and IU (210-149), while the Bears beat the Hoosiers, 202-157.

1650-yard freestyle
Michael Klueh continued his sterling meet against the Bears and Hoosiers with a provisional cut in the distance freestyle to win the 1650 free in 15:31.69. IU showed some life in the race as the Hoosiers went 2-3 in the event. Steffan Troxel grabbed second in 15:40.24, while Alex Brunfeldt took third in 15:44.64. Cal's top swimmer proved to be Daniel Lysaught with a fourth-place 15:48.55.

200-yard backstroke
The top two swimmers in the 200 back cleared the B-cut threshold as David Russell won the event for Cal in 1:45.36, while Texas' Caleb McDermott snared second in 1:46.75. Cal's Mark Eckert rounded out the top three in 1:47.99, while IU's top finisher, Ben Hesen, took eighth in 1:52.85.

100-yard freestyle
UT's Matthew McGinnis led a trio of B-cut swimmers in the 100 free with a top-time of 43.99. Meanwhile, Cal's Nathan Adrian (44.27) and William Copeland (44.42) finished second and third, respectively. Todd Patrick provided Indiana with its highest finish with an eighth-place 45.79.

200-yard breaststroke
Pat Penoyar snagged Indiana's second title of the meet in the 200 breast. He far surpassed the rest of the field with a first-place time of 2:01.96. Texas went 2-3 with Matthew Lowe (2:04.29) and Tyler O'Halloran (2:07.34). Cal posted a fourth-place finish when Troy Nissen touched in 2:08.42.

200-yard butterfly
Texas' Ricky Berens kept us his own stellar meet with a B-cut time of 1:48.00 to win the 200 fly. Cal's Patrick O'Neil took second in 1:48.92, while Michael Klueh grabbed third in 1:50.19 in an off event. IU's Tim Blue recorded the top Hoosier time with a ninth-place 1:56.11.

400-yard freestyle relay
Both Cal and Texas registered provisional-qualifying times in the 400 free relay, but the Bears came out on top. The Cal quartet of Nathan Adrian, William Copeland, Jernej Godec and Dominik Meichtry stopped the clock in 2:58.91, while the Texas foursome of Matthew McGinnis, Ricky Berens, Garrett Weber Gale and Dave Walters finished second in 2:59.05. Notably, both leadoff swimmers, Adrian (44.40) and McGinnis (44.19) posted 100 free B cuts.

Meanwhile, the Longhorn B team of Tyler O'Halloran, Christopher Seitz, Caleb McDermott and Jeremy Harris finished third in 3:03.80, while the top IU effort came by way of Todd Patrick, Lee Houchin, Ben Hesen and Frazier Miller placing fifth in 3:08.55.
