Yale Sweeps Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Connecticut, November 3. THE Yale men's swimming and diving team defeated the Stags of Fairfield 151-37 Friday. The Yale women defeated Fairfield 137-47.

In their first competitive swim of the season, the Bulldog women showed that preseason training had gone well. With the squad split between Fairfield and Southern Connecticut, senior standout Moira McCloskey led the charge with wins in both the 200 meter freestyle and 200 meter backstroke events against the Fairfield Stags. Also with two individual wins were Sara Fracapane and Jane Kim, who dominated the distance and sprint freestyle events respectively. Fracapane won both the 400 meter and 800 meter freestyle events, while Kim opened her collegiate swimming career with wins in the 50 and 100 meter freestyle events.

There were also wins for seniors Liz Berger and Tory Nelson. Berger won the 200 meter butterfly event and Nelson won the 200 meter breastroke.

On the men's side, the squad that made the short trip to Fairfield was one of two men's swimming squads in action on a busy opening night for the Bulldogs. The swimmers at Fairfield were led by Alex Righi, Chris Pool and Dennen McCloskey, who all won two events at the meet.

Righi started his sophomore campaign in familiar winning style, taking first place in the 200 meter backstroke and the 200 meter freestyle. Fellow sophomore Pool finished first in the 50 meter and 100 meter freestyle events, narrowly beating Captain Geof Zann in both events, while McCloskey won in the 800 meter freestyle and the 200 meter butterfly. Kyle McElroy, Jack Hutchinson and Colin Stalnecker also won their events.

"We basically trained through this meet without tapering," Zann said. "Given that we were all in fairly rough shape, the caliber of the results bodes well for next week's meet against Columbia."
