Meet of the Week: No. 3 Texas Extends Lead Over No. 4 California, 118-102; No. 12 Indiana Remains Behind Texas (166-54) and Cal (169-51) After First Day

PHOENIX, Arizona, November 3. AFTER the first day of competition in a two-day men's meet between No. 3 Texas, No. 4 California and No. 12 Indiana, the hosting Longhorns are sitting pretty. Texas leads Cal, 118-102, while Indiana trails UT (166-54) and Cal (169-51).

200-yard medley relay
The Cal contingent of David Russell, Richard Hunter, Jernej Godec and Nathan Adrian took the first event of the evening session with a B-cut time of 1:28.79 in the 200 medley relay. Texas' squad of Thomas Sacco, Tyler O'Halloran, Ricky Berens and Garrett Weber Gale picked up second place in 1;29.58, while Indiana's team of Ben Hesen, Pat Penoyar, Todd Patrick and Lee Houchin tied for third in 1:31.48. The Cal B team of Guy Bernea, Mark Eckert, Dominic Cathey and William Copeland was the other quartet with a 1:31.48.

400-yard IM
Texas' Michael Klueh garnered his second title of the day with a title-winning 3:55.57. Meanwhile, Cal's Louis Vayo placed second in 3:56.61, while IU's Steven Murry rounded out the top three in 3:58.27.

100-yard butterfly
In one of the fastest events of the meet, a trio of swimmers eclipsed the B-cut threshold in the 100 fly. Ricky Berens wound up on top with a 47.81, while Cal's Patrick O'Neil (48.07) and Jernej Godec (48.16) closed out the top three. Indiana's top finisher came in the form of Ben Hesen's fourth-place time of 49.10.

200-yard freestyle
Texas continued to put some space between them and the Bears with a 1-2 finish in the 200 free. Matthew McGinnis provisionally qualified for NCAAs with a winning time of 1:36.46, while Dave Walters placed second in 1:38.55. Cal's Nathan Adrian posted a third-place time of 1:38.68, while IU's Todd Patrick turned in the best Hoosier effort in 1:41.95 to tie for seventh place.

100-yard breaststroke
The Longhorns went 1-3 in the 100 breast when Tyler O'Halloran won the event in 56.03 and Matthew Lowe grabbed third in 56.32. Cal's Richard Hunter split the difference with a second-place 56.09, while Indiana's Pat Penoyar took fourth in 57.86.

100-yard backstroke
In his pet event, Ben Hesen gave the Hoosiers their first-and-only event title of the meet with a B-cut time of 47.85 in the 100 back. Cal's David Russell touched just behind in 48.08 to also clear the B-cut standard for second. Texas' Daniel Rohleder rounded out the top three with a 49.51.

800-yard freestyle relay
In the distance relay, Texas came out on top again when the quartet of Matthew McGinnis, Michael Klueh, Ricky Berens and Dave Walters claimed the title in 6:32.91. Meanwhile, Cal's team of Nathan Adrian, Dominik Meichtry, Daniel Lysaught and Louis Vayo placed second in 6:36.25. Each time provisionally qualified the squads in the event for NCAAs.

Additionally, Cal's B team of Patrick O'Neil, William Copeland, Aaron Casey and Matt Scanlan turned in a third-place 6:51.11, while IU's top squad of Todd Patrick, Alex Brunfeldt, Steven Murry and Ben Hesen took fourth in 6;52.00.

The meet will conclude with a third session beginning on Saturday at 9 a.m.
