Meet of the Week Preview: SUNY-Maritime at NYU

By Jason Marsteller

PHOENIX, Arizona, October 31. THIS week's first Meet of the Week comes by way of an East Coast clash between the men of NYU and SUNY-Maritime. Both teams have concluded one competition with NYU downing Vassar, 111-67, and SUNY-Maritime winning the Mount Saint Mary's Invitational over the weekend.

Here is a quick preview of the NYU/SUNY-Maritime match-up:

Date and Time: Wednesday, November 1, 2006, 5 p.m.
Location: New York, N.Y.
Facility: Coles Sports and Recreation Center

SUNY-Maritime's Last Time Out:
SUNY-Maritime picked up first-place honors in the men's Mount Saint Mary's Invitational. Overall, the team pulled off the feat almost exclusively on depth as SUNY-Maritime only won one event title. Jamal Joseph took home top honors in the 50 fly with a 25.72 out of the first heat.

Looking forward with SUNY-Maritime head coach Peter Vecchio:
SUNY-Maritime College men's swimming is looking forward to our first dual meet of the season against NYU. Our squad started off a great season with a first-place win at the Mount Saint Mary's College Invitational this past Sunday. We came out ahead of a superior William Patterson University team, and are primed to start our regular dual meet season. Our squad is one of the best Maritime College has seen in many years. We have a lot of experienced senior athletes leading our team. We have taken on a great staff of coaches this season with the aim of fine-tuning our game, especially in terms of stroke technique and drill. Our woman's squad continues to grow and make progress. This is only the second official season for our woman's team and they are working hard on having another great season.

NYU's Last Time Out:
NYU's men's team opened the 2006-07 season with a 111-67 triumph over Vassar College on Saturday. Sophomore Eric Wang won a pair of title in the 200 IM (1:58.26) and the 500 free (4:54.68). Another pair of underclassmen also recorded victories, as sophomore Ben Barnes collected a win in the 200 free (1:52.36) and freshman Eric Pcholinski posted a win in the 50 free (21.79). In the diving events, sophomore Cooper Morton won the three-meter (180.89 points), while junior Kevin Ryan won the one-meter (172.12).

Looking forward with NYU head coach Bob Sorensen:
It's always fun to face a long-time traditional opponent like SUNY-Maritime. This meet will give us the opportunity to test some of our freshmen and see what they can offer us as the year progresses.
