Loyola Hosts NJIT, Saint Francis

BALTIMORE, Maryland, October 27. THE Loyola men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated NJIT on Friday night at Mangione Aquatic Center while the women fell to Saint Francis University in non-conference action. The men won by a score of 196-59 while the women swam past NJIT, 222-5, but dropped a 158-130 score to Red Flash.

On the men's side, Loyola had multiple winners including 1-2-3 finishes in four events. The `Hounds went 1-2-3 in the fourth event of the night, the 1,000-yard freestyle, with freshman Greg Thomasson setting a winning pace of 10:45.46. Freshman Colin McKenna and sophomore Richard Gibbons rounded out the event for Loyola.

Minutes later, freshman Ernest Verrico led a Greyhound sweep in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking in at 1:48.72. Sophomore Ian Perazzelli placed second, edging out third-place classmate Paul Ebert. Verrico also led a 1-2-3 Loyola finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.64 while McKenna and junior Tim Hoover finished second and third respectively.

The Greyhounds also swept the 200-yard butterfly with freshman Zachary Oster placing ahead of sophomore Jonathan Sheffield and freshman Patrick Finnegan in the event.

Other winners include the Reeser brothers, both of whom won multiple events. Senior Ryan Reeser claimed victory in the 50-yard freestyle (21.77) and 100-yard butterfly (52.84), while freshman Brad Reeser was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke (58.71) and 500-yard freestyle (4:53.92). Sophomore Doug Alban was also a winner, taking the 200-yard backstroke in 2:03.96.

On the women's side, senior Michelle Ryan and freshman Victoria Kamauff won two events apiece. Ryan placed first in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.33) and 200-yard IM (2:16.25), while Kamauff captured the 100-yard backstroke in 1:03.23 and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:14.90.

Senior Megan Sterback also won her events on the 1- and 3-meter boards while junior Liz Chlebda took first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:35.56) and freshman Megan Royer took first in the 50-yard freestyle (25.14) to round out the individual winners.

The men won a pair of relays with Verrico, Oster, Ebert and Brad Reeser winning the 200 Free and Alban, Finnegan, Carl Sylvester and Gregory Yelovich taking the 200 Medley.
