Big Ten Announces Weekly Awards

CHICAGO, Illinois, December 13. MICHIGAN State and Iowa captured this week's awards from the Big Ten Conference. Krzysztof Olszewski of Michigan State, won the men's swimmer award, while teammate Matt Akerley won the diver of the week. For the women, Alison Gschwend of Iowa won swimmer of the week, while Katie Edwards of Michigan State won female diver of the week.

Olszewski played a critical part in Michigan State's first dual win of the season, a 196-137 victory over Ball State on Saturday. The sophomore placed first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:25.71) and the 200 individual medley (1:57.13) before earning a second-place finish in the 200 backstroke (1:56.97). This is Olszewski's first career honor and the first for the Spartans this season.

Akerley picked up his first win of the season off the three-meter with a score of 273.83 as MSU defeated Ball State on Saturday. The senior took second in the one-meter at 254.15, finishing behind teammate David Garry. The award is the second of Akerley's career and the first for a Spartan diver this season.

Gschwend recorded three first-place finishes as the Hawkeyes downed Iowa State, 181.5-117.5, on Friday. The sophomore posted a collegiate-best time of 2:09.43 in the 200-yard individual medley despite finishing second, while placing first in the 100 (57.55) and 200 backstroke (2:06.43) before leading off the first-place 200 medley relay team (1:46.44). This is Gschwend's first career honor.

Edwards swept the springboard events as she helped the Spartans to a 150-150 tie against Ball State on Saturday. The senior took the one-meter with a score of 275.18 before posting a 279.38 mark off the three-meter. This is the first weekly honor of Edwards' career.
