William & Mary Bounces Mary Washington, 121-77

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia, October 21. THE William and Mary's women's swimming and diving team defeated Mary Washington by a score of 121-77. The win evens the Tribe's record at 1-1 (1-0 CAA), while the Division III Eagles fall to 0-1.

"I thought we swam great," head coach McGee Moody said afterwards. "We've had a tough few weeks in practice, so it's good for the athletes to see that work paying off."

The top performer in a meet where one team wins every event is often a tough choice to make, however, only one school record was broken. Freshman Katie Radloff (Arlington, VA) swam 51.59 to win the 100 free and break her own school record that she set last weekend in her first collegiate meet. Radloff also picked up an individual victory in the 200 free, swimming 1:52.59, the second-fastest time in W&M history (Alyssa Lengle, 1:51.96 in 2001). Fellow first-year Jill Hamilton (Bethesda, MD) won the 1000 free in 10:32.63, a new personal best and the fourth-fastest 1000 free in the record books.

Continuing with the freshman theme, Suzanne Figuers (Cary, NC) won the 200 IM with the Tribe's eight-best swim all-time, 2:10.19. Erin Welshofer (Charlotte, NC) won the 200 fly for the second week in a row, swimming a new personal best of 2:08.97 and moving closer to ninth on the W&M all-time list. Junior diver Meg O'Connor (Loudanville, NY) won both 1-Meter diving events, moving into fifth all-time at William and Mary with her six-dive score of 223.65 in the optionals event.

Team veterans also picked up event wins in the meet. Senior captain Marnie Rognlien (Nokesville, VA) swam 24.54 to claim victory in the 50 free. Junior Meredith David (Somerdale, NJ) won the 200 back easily in 2:09.14, and sophomore Marina Falcone (Potomac, MD) was first to the wall in the 500 free, swimming 5:08.06.

William and Mary exhibitioned all competitors in both relays, the 200 breaststroke, and both diving events, but still posted the top marks in all events. The 400 medley relay of David, Kelly Reitz (Chesapeake, VA), Welshofer, and Courtney Alles (Manassas Park, VA) swam 3:57.59 to open the meet. Senior captain Reitz also won the 200 breast in easy fashion, timing 2:24.39. The meet finished with another Tribe team finishing first, as Falcone, Sara Fitzsimmons (Lorton, VA), Rognlien, and Radloff finished the 400 free relay in 3:33.97.
