Washington State Triumphs Over San Jose State, 181-77

PULLMAN, Washington, October 20. IN the first home meet of the 2006-07 season, the WSU Cougars defeated the San Jose State Spartans 181-77 on Friday, at WSU's Gibb Pool. Senior Erin McCleave led all scorers with three individual wins and turned in 27 points for the Cougars. She took back-to-back wins in the 1000 and 200 freestyle events and her time of 1:51.93 in the 200 freestyle set a Gibb Pool record.

"I was really pleased with Erin's performance in the 1000 free and the 200 free," said Head Coach Erica Quam. "She's never done that double and I think just trying to do different things to challenge her mentally is good. She's been going for that 200 freestyle pool record for a long time."

McCleave also came in first in the 200 backstroke. Senior Kayli Changstrom took first place in both the 500 freestyle (5:03.22) and the 400 IM (4:33.08) while Afton Pickett came in first in the 100 backstroke (58.73). Elyse Peterson saw victory in the 100 breaststroke with a time 1:05.08. Monika Povilonyte added a win in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.29) as the Cougars swept the top three spots in four events. WSU won 13 of the 14 events, including victories in both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay events.

"We made some progress in a lot of areas," said Head Coach Erica Quam. "In a lot of cases we were faster than some of the splits against Idaho and some of those were from relay exchanges so that's good that we improved in speed. They raced well all through the meet."

Freshmen Shawna Keller and Michaela Ahlin earned their first victories as Cougars. Ahlin, a native of Tyreso, Sweden, contributed 18 points with wins in both the 200 butterfly (2:05.96) and the 100 butterfly (57.01). Keller took first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.44 in her Cougar swimming debut.

San Jose State's Lauren Mar had the only Spartan victory as she took first place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.34. Hannah Tringham contributed 7 points by finishing second in the 400 IM and third in the 200 butterfly.
