Illinois State Dives Past Northern Iowa, 196.5-97.5

NORMAL, Illinois, October 13. THE competition was intense and season bests were being shattered in Horton Pool Friday night on the campus of Illinois State University. Despite injuries and illnesses on the Redbird team, Illinois State defeated Northern Iowa with a score of 196.5-97.5.

While very pleased with the performance of his team tonight, head coach Steve Paska did not feel as though this meet was an easy win.

"Stacey Simmer [head coach of Northern Iowa] and I have been coaching together for four or five years now," said Paska. "She has a young team but also has some very outstanding swimmers. I am very impressed with what Northern Iowa did tonight. I know Stacey will have her swimmers ready to swim fast and competitive by this February at the conference meet. "

With the team competing the next two weekends, Paska finds himself concerned with the injuries and illnesses that are currently plaguing the `Birds.

"The girls competed hard tonight, but we still have a lot of the team out sick and injured." Paska said. "We want to be the best team we possibly can, so hopefully we'll have our full contingent of Redbird swimmers and divers in the very near future. I, as well as the other coaches, am very happy with what the swimmers who are healthy and training as expected are doing, but right now we really need some girls to get healthy."

Divers Katie Janonis, Liza Perrino, Kaitlin Zaumseil and Annette Danilowski set new season bests on both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter boards. Diving coach Alison Cipri was proud of each individual diver, but was especially happy with the 3-Meter performance by Janonis.

"We're obviously improving considering every single diver on both boards scored higher than they did at our last meet," said Cipri. "Katie was on fire tonight scoring a 249.59 on the 3-Meter, which was 32 points higher than what she scored at our last meet."
