UCLA Women Beat Oregon State and UC Santa Barbara

LOS ANGELES, California, October 13. CYNDI Gallagher and the UCLA Bruin swim team opened up the 2006-07 season on Friday with two victories, defeating Oregon State 140-117 and UC Santa Barbara 145-112. It was the 23rd consecutive victory over the Gauchos and sixth straight over the Beavers. UCLA is now 2-0 (1-0 Pac-10) on the season and will take their undefeated record to the University of San Diego next weekend for a meet on Friday, October 20.

In all, the Bruins tallied eight victories and four meet records in the pool on Friday. Senior Katie Nelson and junior Nicolette Teo posted double victories in their respective events as Nelson won the 200 (1:51.35) and 500 freestyle (4:54.08), and Teo was victorious in the 100 (1:04.18) and 200 (2:18.87) breaststroke.

Senior Amy Thurman notched a win and two meet records in the 100 Freestyle with her swim of 50.68. The time was also an NCAA B qualifier.

The 400 medley relay team of sophomore Madeleine Stanton, seniors Jeana Fuccillo and Thurman, and sophomore Anna Poteete set two meet records in a time of 3:47.14 to win that event.

Poteete also swam an NCAA B qualifier in the 50 freestyle (23.36) to win, while junior Chiemi Yamamoto won the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:10.84.

Several Bruins also finished in the top-three on Friday – freshman Julie Imagane in the 1000 free (3rd, 10:14.20); Stanton in the 100 back (3rd, 58.73) and 200 back (2nd, 2:04.38); senior Courtney Iversen in the 200 back (3rd, 2:06.06); senior Luisa Los-Santos in the 100 breast (3rd, 1:05.48); Thurman in the 50 free (2nd, 23.90) and 100 fly (3rd, 56.67); Yamamoto in the 200 breast (3rd, 2:20.08); and junior Shannon Hackett in the 500 free (2nd, 4:58.21).

Kim Vandenberg, who finished her eligibility with UCLA last season, competed unattached. Her times of 23.58 in the 50 freestyle and 4:52.48 in the 500 freestyle would have won those events had it not been a scored meet.
