Russia Dominant in Day Two Prelims of FINA Junior Synchro World Champs

FOSHAN, China, October 8. RUSSIA maintained its preeminent stature in synchronized swimming by taking the top spots in the solo and team combination preliminary rounds on Sunday.

In the team category, Russia’s squad of Aleksandra Patskevich, Aleksandra ElChinova, Viktoria Anufrieva, Svetlana Ponkratova, Daria Korobova, Tatiana Zavalishina, Veronika Fedulova, Anna Udovik, Appolinara Simoshina and Volkova Lvbov dominated prelims with a 94.30 total. The team notched 47.30 technical merit points and 47.00 artistic impression points to lead the pack.

Japan’s team of Yukiko Inui, Mai Nakamura, Chiaki Kagaya, Yuma Kawai, Miho Arai, Yumi Adachi, Yui Ueminami, Natsuki Ohhara, Chihiro Matsumoto and Yuki Kagaya claimed 92.60 points for second out of prelims. The Japanese posted matching 46.30 tallies in both technical merit and artistic impression.

The home Chinese contingent pulled off something of an upset by holding off Spain for third. China’s group of He Dandan, Han Ying, Ge Xiaowei, Huang Xuechen, Yuan Wenjing, Xu Yue, Bao Xiaoxiao, Sun Wenyan, Yu Jiao and Liang Yun totaled 92.20 points for third. The Chinese recorded 46.40 points from artistic impression and 45.80 in technical merit.

Spain finished as the only other 90-plus team as Ona Carbonell, Cristina Violan, Alba Gonzalez, Laia Blanco, Carolina Lopez, Paula Klamburg, Rocio Escudero, Laura Lopez, Paula Alcorta and Marta Gomez picked up 91.80 points for fourth. The Spaniards registered 46.10 artistic impression points and 45.70 technical merit points.

In the solo competition. Russia’s ElChinova crushed the field with 94.10 points tallied from 47.30 artistic impression points and 46.80 technical merit points. Japan’s Inui tied with China’s Xuechen for second with matching 92.50 totals to round out the top three competitors. Inui picked up 46.70 artistic impression points with 45.80 technical merit points, while Xuechen grabbed 46.50 technical merit points to go with 46.00 artistic impression points.

The championships continue through Wednesday. Figure competition occurs on Monday, before finals in duet and free combination start on Tuesday. The meet concludes with solo and team finals on Wednesday.
