Florida State Tops Clemson, 179-116 Women/198-97 Men

TALLAHASSEE, Florida, October 7 THE Florida State men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened up their seasons on a high note as both Seminole squads earned dual meet wins over Clemson. The men defeated the Tigers 198-87 while the women were victorious 179-116.

"Clemson is a good team and they always give us a heck of a meet," head coach Neil Harper said. "Initially I was concerned about it because you never know what is in store. They are a good team and well coached so I think that we answered the call. I feel much better now then I did a couple of hours ago. It was a good test and I think for the most part they did real well and past it."

Leading the way for the men's team with three individual event victories was junior Ian Powell (Guernsey Channel, Islands). Powell started out by winning the 200 fly (1:49.34), then followed that up with wins in the 200 back (1:50.00) and 100 fly (50.27).
"Ian (Powell) trains real hard and he competes real hard," Harper said. "He is just setting the tone for this year. He had a great year last season and got sick at the conference meet so he feels that he has a lot to prove and he sure did today. He started the meet off real well and it's good for our team to know that we have a key person like him to count on."

Sophomore Christie Raleigh (Toms River, N.J.) led the way for the women's team as she won two individual events. She finished first in the 50 free (23.03) and 100 free (50.72).

"It was good to see that the most valuable swimmer, in my mind, at the ACC Championships last year just pick up where she left off," Harper said. "Christie (Raleigh) is key for us in those events and we are going to rely on her heavily. She has a great supporting cast and I think she led by example today. It is another boost for us to know that we have her on our team."

Freshman Kylsie Grimes (Hartland, Wis.) shined in her first meet for the Seminoles as she also recorded two individual event wins. She finished first in the 1000 free (9:24.42) and 200 free (1:51.58).

Winning two individual events each for the men's team were senior Alex Kennon (Winter Park, Fla.) and junior Billy Jamerson (Savannah, Ga.). Kennon took the 50 free (20.75) and 100 free (45.64) while Jamerson won the 100 breast (55.68) and 200 breast (2:05.08).

In diving, freshman Aleia Monden (Mililani, Hawaii) won both the 1M (263.78) and 3M (274.88) for the women while sophomore Dan Frebel (Fort Wayne, Ind.) also won the 1M (301.20) and 3M (317.40) for the men.

In the mid to distance freestyle events on the men's side, freshman Nick Graves (Lexington, Ky.) won the 1000 free (9:24.42), senior Steve Roof (Canton, Ohio) took the 500 free (4:32.02) and junior Kyle Young (Oviedo, Fla.) finished first in the 200 free (1:40.87).

Junior Jarryd Botha (Worcester, South Africa) picked up another win for the men taking the 100 back in 51.77.

Senior Lauren Brick (Culpeper, Va.) showed once again why she is an All-American in the 100 breast as she took first place in the event with a time of 1:03.35. Also picking up individual event wins for the women's team was junior Lauren Sparg (Durban, South Africa) in the 100 fly (56.24), sophomore Ann Cipoletti (Charleston, W. Va.) in the 200 breast (2:19.48) and freshman Tiffany Elias (Phoenix, Ariz.) in the 200 fly (2:02.34).

The Seminoles scored big points to open up the meet as both the women's and men's teams won the 200 medley relay. The women's team of Raleigh, Brick, Sparg and freshman Leigh Ann King (Baton Rouge, La.) took first with a time of 1:43.11 while the men's team of Powell, Jamerson, Kennon and freshman Corey Swanson (Tampa, Fla.) won with a time of 1:31.53.
