Australia, IOC Agree To Olympic Doping Control Protocol

Sydney, Australia – The Australian Government and the IOC announced they have reached an agreement in principle, pending approval by the IOC Executive Board, establishing a transparent and accountable results management system for the Sydney Olympic Games. The agreement, based on proposals offered by the Australian Government, was reached yesterday evening during a videoconference between Minister for Justice and Customs Senator Amanda Vanstone and IOC Sydney Coordination Commission Chairman Dr. Jacques Rogge.

The agreement also clears the way for collaboration between the Australian Drug Agency (ASDA), the IOC, and SOCOG in the conduct of out-of competition testing in the period leading up to the Games.

As part of their discussions, the IOC and Australia reaffirmed their commitment to develop a valid test for the detection of EPO and resolved to have procedures in place to review and approve any prospective test that may be developed in time for the Sydney Olympic Games.

“Our discussions have confirmed IOC agreement in critical areas of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games drug testing program,” Senator Vanstone said. “We have developed clear procedures for transparent and accountable test results management. “Our next challenge, one in which I remain optimistic, is developing a valid test for EPO. With the help of funding from the IOC and the Australian Government, scientists at the Australian Sports Drug Testing Laboratory and the Australian Institute of Sport are working toward this goal alongside their international research partners. I anxiously await their results.”

Dr. Rogge commented, “What is most important is that the results management system is accountable and transparent. Our agreement, benefiting from the expertise of each side, provides both. I thank Senator Vanstone and Minister Kelly for helping accomplish this.”
