Coventry to Host 2007 UK School Games -- September 18, 2006

LONDON, England, September 18. THE United Kingdom School Games chose Coventry to host the 2007 edition of the annual competition.

The Games, which were introduced this year and will run annually until 2011, provide 16-and-under athletes the chance to experience an international meet feel. The event, held this year in Glasgow, witnessed more than 1,000 athletes from across the UK compete in five different sports and the numbers look to grow.

Next year’s swimming events will be held at the Coventry Sports and Leisure Center. It will see athletes from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales compete in a program of 32 Olympic events, with a number of these multi-disability.

World Youth Championship silver medalist Xavier Mohammed, who won gold in 200 backstroke at this year’s School Games, describes how important this event has been for him.

“The UK School Games has been a fantastic event and has provided me with a huge boost as I move towards my goal of becoming Olympic Champion,” he said.

Chair of the Millennium Commission and Minister for Sport, Richard Caborn MP commented of the promising future of these Games.

“I am delighted that Coventry is hosting the UK School Games in 2007,” Caborn said. “Year-on-year, this event will continue to grow, both in number of sports and competitors, and Glasgow has really set the bar for a successful Games.”
