NCAA Swimming: No. 1 Texas Downs Both No. 3 Arizona and No. 11 Arizona State -- January 30, 2000

Tucson, AZ - The No.1-ranked University of Texas men's swimming and diving team improved its dual-meet record to 7-0 by defeating both No. 3 Arizona and No. 11 Arizona State by scores of 206-147 in competition at the Hillenbrand Aquatics Center in Tucson, AZ, on Saturday. Also in competition in Tucson on Saturday, the Texas women earned a 190.5-162.5 dual-meet win over No. 18 Arizona State but fell 247-106 to No. 2 Arizona, making their record on the season 2-5.

The Texas men dominated the second day of competition, winning seven of the day's 12 events. Leading the way for the Horns was junior Matt Ulrickson (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Saguaro), who captured victory in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke competitions. In the 100 back, Texas was able to solidify its leads over both Arizona and Arizona State by finishing 1-2-3, with junior Nate Dusing (Villa Hills, Ky. / Covington Catholic) and sophomore Tommy Hannan (Baltimore, Md. / Mount St. Joseph) completing the sweep for the Horns. Additionally, Dusing finished second behind Ulrickson in the 200-yard backstroke competition.

The Longhorn men also found success in relay competition, winning both of Saturday's relay events. The foursome of Ulrickson, senior Mike Laitala (Richardson, Texas / Jesuit College Prep), Dusing and Jones combined to capture the 200-yard medley relay in the first event of the day, while the team of Jones, Dusing, junior Jamie Rauch (Houston, Texas / Cypress Creek) and freshman Chris Kemp (Southlake, Texas / Ft. Worth Christian) earned victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay to close out the meet.

For the Texas women, junior Colleen Lanné (Tucson, Ariz. / Salpointe Catholic) captured her second and third individual-event wins of the weekend, taking first-place honors in both the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races. Sophomore Bethany Lindberg (Woodbridge, Va. / Woodbridge) also posted two strong performances for the Horns, finishing second behind Arizona's Beth Botsford, a 1996 Olympic gold medalist, in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke competitions.

The Texas women's relay teams also proved successful on the day, finishing second in both of the relay events. In the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Lindberg, sophomore Stephanie Jenkins (Virginia Beach, Va. / Kempsville), freshman Tanica Jamison (Dublin, Calif. / Dublin) and Lanné took second-place honors, while the foursome of Lanné, freshman Erin Phenix (Cincinnati, Ohio / Ursuline Academy), Jamison and senior Ariadne Legendre (Montreal, Quebec / College Ahuntsic) claimed second place in the meet's final race - the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Head coach Eddie Reese's Texas men resume competition on Friday, February 4 when they travel to TCU, while the women will return to the pool on Saturday, February 5 at SMU.
