Weir Obliterates American Record in 100 Freestyle; Peirsol Prevails in 800 Free

IRVINE, California, August 5. AMANDA Weir, representing Swim Atlanta, hacked a significant amount of time off the American record in the 100 freestyle on Saturday night at the United States National Championships at the William Woollett Aquatic Center.

Weir, a 2004 Olympian, blazed through her two laps in 53.58, well under the former record of 53.99, held by Natalie Coughlin. Weir split 25.99 at the 50-meter mark and powered into the wall to finish ahead of Coughlin, who was timed in 54.25. Weir's time ranks fourth all-time.

In the first event of the night, Hayley Peirsol defeated Kate Ziegler, the reigning world champion, in the 800 freestyle. Peirsol stopped the clock in 8:26.45 with Ziegler just behind in 8:27.65.
