Arizona Women Swimmers Cruise Past California; UA Men Suffer First Loss of the Year -- January 26, 2000

Berkeley, CA - The Arizona women's swimming and diving squad upped its dual meet record to 7-1, 3-0 in the Pac-10, with a 132-111 triumph over California (Jan. 21) at the Spieker Aquatics Complex. Meanwhile, the UA men (4-1, 1-1 Pac-10) suffered their first loss of the year by dropping a 135-108 decision to the Golden Bears. The meet was Arizona's last action in a short course meters format (25 meter pool) until the NCAA Championships in March.

For the women's team, senior Trina Jackson helped the Cats to remain undefeated in Pac-10 action by capturing event titles in the 400m free (4:16.38) and 800m free (8:43.93). Also strong for UA was senior Denali Knapp who was victorious in the 50m free (26.07) and swam the lead-off leg of the 400m free relay that finished first in a time of 3:45.20.

Once again, the leader for the men's team was senior, All America Ryk Neethling who captured three individual events. Neethling's wins in the 200m free (1:47.57), 400m free (3:50.79) and 800m free (7:57.05), allowed him to push his personal overall record to 17-1 this year in all freestyle events that he has entered.
