Day Six Features Pair of European Records at Europeans

BUDAPEST, Hungary, Aug. 5 A pair of European records fell at the 28th LEN European Championships on Saturday.

Women’s 50-meter Breaststroke Semifinals
Britain’s Kate Haywood posted the fastest qualifying time with a 31.47, while Russia’s Elena Bogomazova touched second in 31.62. Meanwhile, Hungary’s own Agnes Kovacs posted the third-best time of semis with a 32.00.

Men’s 100-meter Butterfly Finals
European record holder Andriy Serdinov won the event in 51.95, just .06 seconds off his meet record time. France’s Amaury Leveaux tool silver in 52.76, while Russia’s Nikolay Skvortsov grabbed bronze in 52.96.

:"I wanted to break the European record here in Budapest,” Serdinov said. “But the weather conditions disturbed me."

Women’s 200-meter Freestyle Finals
Poland’s Otylia Jedrzejczak picked up gold in 1:57.25, while Germany’s Annika Liebs, who split a 1:55 anchor leg during Germany’s 800-meter freestyle world record earlier in the meet, placed second in 1:57.48. Meanwhile, Laure Manaudou finished third in 1:58.38.

"I had planned to swim the first 100 meters not so fast because I knew I was going to be good in the second,” Jedrzejczak said. “I have won many international titles in my career in the 200 fly, but this is my first victory in the 200 free."

Men’s 50-meter Freestyle Semifinals
France’s Fred Bousquet nearly broke Alexander Popov’s meet record of 21.95 set in 2000 with a semifinal swim of 21.99. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Olexandr Volynets placed second in 22.02, while Poland’s Bartosz Kizierowski touched third in 22.09.

Women’s 50-meter Backstroke Finals
World record co-holder Janine Pietsch of Germany snared the meet record with a 28.36 to surpass second-place Aleksandra Herasimenia’s previous standard of 28.51. Meanwhile, Herasimenia rolled in for silver with a 28.72 to hold off third-place Antje Buschshulte of Germany, who touched in 28.73.

Men’s 200-meter Backstroke Finals
Russia’s Andriy Vyatchanin tore down Germany’s Helge Meeuw’s European record of 1:56.34 set in June by touching in 1:55.44 for gold. Meanwhile, Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh placed second in 1:56.69, while Romania’s Razvan Florea earned bronze in 1:57.83.

:"I am in good shape right now and I knew I could win this with a new European record,” Vyatchanin said..”Now, all I have to do is to focus on our medley relay tomorrow."

:"I improved my personal best today,” Cseh said. “But Vyatchanin was unbeatable today. I am pretty tired but I still think I will swim a very good time in the 400 IM finals."

Women’s 200-meter Butterfly Semifinals
Hungary’s Beatrix Boulsevicz stopped the clock in first with a 2:09.14, while Italy’s Francesca Segat finished second in 2:09.22. Meanwhile, Poland’s Otylia Jedrzejczak posted the third-best time of 2:09.48.

Men’s 50-meter Breaststroke Finals
Ukraine’s Oleg Lisogor and Italy’s Alessandro Terrin will share the 50 breast title with matching 27.48s, while Slovakia’s Matjaz Markic pocketed bronze in 27.87.

"After I could not win the 100 breast here,” Lisogor said. “I said to myself that I simply had to win this one."

"This a new Italian record, which is a big success for me,” Terrin said. “Since the 50 is not in the Olympics I will have to start focusing on the 100 for Beijing."

Women’s 50-meter Freestyle Semifinals
100-meter freestyle world record holder Britta Steffen of Germany qualified first with a 24.89, while Marleen Veldhuis posted the second-best time of 24.93. Sweden’s Therese Alshammar, the meet-record holder, rounded out the top three with a 25.03.

Men’s 800-meter Freestyle Relay Finals
Italy broke its own European record of 7:10.86 set in 2001 with a blistering 7;09.60 on the shoulders of its quartet of Massimiliano Rosolino, David Berbotto, Nicola Cassio and Filippo Magnini. Meanwhile, Britain took second in 7:11.63, while Greece posted a third-place 7:16.67.
