Hoff Sets Meet Record During Day Two Prelims

IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 2 KATIE Hoff started off the second day of preliminary action strong with a meet record in the 200-meter freestyle at the 2006 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming Nationals Championships. She clocked a 1:58.03 to down Natalie Coughlin’s previous standard. Meanwhile, swimmers notched 154 Olympic Trial cuts throughout the morning competition.

Women’s 100 Backstroke
No. 10 seed Brooke Bishop made the biggest move up the seeding ladder as she posted the top-qualifying time of the afternoon with a 1:02.18, while No. 3 seed Leila Vaziri of Indiana University will join her in the center lane after notching a second-place 1:02.27.

Meanwhile, No. 4 seed Lauren English (1:02.30), No. 1 seed Margaret Hoelzer (1:02.49), No. 2 seed Mary Descenza (1:02.97), No. 8 seed Ariana Kukors (1:03.30), No. 12 seed Brielle White and No. 11 seed Julia Smit (1:03.87) will join them in the championship finals.

Additionally, No. 5 seed Helen Silver (15th) and No. 6 seed Kristen Shickora (28th) suffered the largest seeding falls. Notably, 24 swimmers cleared the Olympic Trial cut.

Men’s 200-meter Freestyle
No. 1 seed Michael Phelps cruised into the top-qualifying time of the afternoon with a 1:46.96, while his Club Wolverine teammates dominated the rest of the day. No. 2 seed Klete Keller posted the second-fastest time with a 1:47.99, while No. 3 seed Peter Vanderkaay touched in third with a 1:48.41.

Other swimmers joining Club Wolverine in the championship heat will be No. 4 seed Jayme Cramer (1:48.58), No. 18 seed Ryan Lochte (1:48.85), No. 6 seed David Walters (1:48.92), No. 8 seed Shaun Phillips (1:49.48) and No. 11 seed Adam Ritter (1:49.59).

The biggest seeding drop came by way of No. 7 seed Robert Savulich, who fell to 33rd-place with a 1:52.59. Overall, 35 swimmers eclipsed the Olympic Trial cut.

Men’s 100-meter Backstroke
No. 2 seed Randall Bal posted the fastest time of the afternoon with a sterling 54.27 to finish ahead of Irvine, Calif., local Aaron Peirsol’s 54.51. Meanwhile, No. 6 seed David Plummer (55.00), No. 9 seed James Wike (55.21), No. 11 seed David Russell (55.33), No. 5 seed Matthew Grevers (55.34), No. 10 seed Nicholas Thomas (55.35) and No. 4 seed Peter Marshall (55.46).

Meanwhile, No. 3 seed Ryan Lochte declared a false start to concentrate on the 200-meter freestyle, while No. 7 seed Adam Mania and No. 8 seed Hongzhe Sun fell out of the championship heat. Overall, 24 swimmers clocked Olympic Trial cuts.

Women’s 200-meter Freestyle
The women’s 200 free witnessed a lot of changes from original seeding. Four of the top eight seeds did not make the championship finals. Additionally, No. 2 seed Katie Hoff posted an incredibly fast afternoon swim with a meet-record time of 1:58.03. That performance knocked off Natalie Coughlin’s effort of 1:58.20 set in 2002. Meanwhile, No. 1 seed Coughlin touched in 1:58.34.

No. 11 seed Amanda Weir (1:58.56), No. 17 seed Lacey Nymeyer (1:58.93), No. 4 seed Dana Vollmer (1:59.67), No. 14 seed Kara Lynn Joyce (2:00.36), No. 20 seed Kate Dwelley (2:00.41) and No. 8 seed Erin Reilly (2:00.55) will make up the rest of the championship heat.

Meanwhile, No. 3 seed Whitney Myers (13th), No. 5 seed Caroline Burckle (41st), No. 6 seed Kaitlin Sandeno (23rd) and No. 7 seed Kate Ziegler (16th) could not hold onto their seeds. In total, 40 swimmers recorded Olympic Trial cuts.

Men’s 200-meter Butterfly
No. 1 Michael Phelps continued his strong meet with the top time in the 200 fly by tallying a 1:57.83. Meanwhile, No. 2 seed Davis Tarwater held his seed with a 1:58.40, while No. 3 seed Daniel Madwed answered with a third-place 1:58.70.

Additionally, No. 9 seed Alex Vanderkaay (1:59.92), No 10 seed Patrick Cary (2:00.31), No. 16 seed Eddie Erazo (2:00.35) and No. 4 seed David Mosko (2:00.86) will join them in the championship heat. Incredibly, No. 34 seed Zachary Wood rocketed into title contention with a seventh-place time of 2:00.86.

Overall, No. 5 seed Tom Zaferes (12th), No. 6 seed Richard Berens (18th), No. 7 seed Matthew Patton (10th) and No. 8 seed Matthew Bartlett (9th) could not hold seed into the championship heat. Meanwhile, 31 swimmers in all posted Olympic Trial cut times.
