Triple Gold for Johnson at British Age Group Championships

PONDS FORGE, Sheffield, July 29. MATTHEW Johnson from the city of Leeds won three gold medals on day two of the Cheestrings ASA National Age Group Championships dominating the 11-year-old group.

His opened up the day in the 400-meter freestyle when he finished in 4:36.49 more than six seconds clear of silver medalist Harry Payne who finished in 4:43.01. Bruno Banks edged out Tom Bielich to claim the bronze medal in 4:47.19.

The 100-meter butterfly brought Johnson’s second gold. Johnson touched in 1:10.20, just ahead of Luke Woolstencroft’s time of 1:11.04 pushing last night’s double gold medalist Ryan Flanagan into bronze with 1:11.55.

Johnson’s third gold of the night and fourth of the meet came in the 200-meter breaststroke. With little water to split them at the 150-meter mark Johnson, Bradley Kemp and James Clark had to dig deep for their final places. Johnson’s time was 2:53.75 as he and Kemp, who took sliver in 2:53.95, edged away from Clark who had to settle for the bronze in 2:55.15.

In the medal rankings, the city of Leeds is at the top with five gold, two silver and two bronze. In second is Gallica SC with four gold, three silver and two bronze, while Newburn stands in third with three gold, one silver and five bronze.
