Slippery Rock Ordered to Reinstate Women’s Swimming and Water Polo

ORLANDO, Fla., July 25. LAST Friday, July 21, U.S. District Chief Judge Donetta Ambrose ruled that Slippery Rock College must reinstate its women's swimming and water polo teams, announced Dr. Rich Morris, president of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).

"This is a great day for college swimming," Morris added.

The Women's Law Project quoted the judge as saying that for the college to "cut viable, competitive women's teams showed it was failing to accommodate the interests of its female students in athletic competition."

This application of the second prong of Title 9 may provide a precedent for men's sports as well. Cutting a viable, competitive program with a long history of achievement can certainly be held to that standard. Laws against discrimination must not discriminate themselves.
