KING Aquatic Club Announces Expansion

MERCER ISLAND, Washington, July 8. KING Aquatic Club, one of the leading swimming clubs in the United States, has announced that it is expanding its presence in King County by opening a new aquatics program on Mercer Island. KING is the region's largest competitive swim club with more than 300 swimmers in five aquatics programs in King and Pierce counties. The club's largest site, the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, is a center for regional, national and international competitions.

The Mercer Island program will be its first on Seattle's Eastside and the club's sixth overall, indicated Sean Hutchison, head coach of KING Aquatic Club. He said the Mercer Island program will begin in early September following a series of tryouts to fill the program's roster. The club will use the pool at the Mercerwood Shore Club as its base of operations on Mercer Island. The pool, which is located on Lake Washington, will be enclosed this fall with an inflatable bubble that will enable year-round training for the club.

"We are very excited about our new program on Mercer Island," Hutchison said. "We believe there is huge potential for swimming growth on the Eastside. Mercerwood is an ideal location because it's convenient for athletes on the Eastside and in Seattle as well as on Mercer Island."

Hutchison said the club is conducting a national search for a coach to manage the Mercer Island program. The new program will be able to accommodate about 100 swimmers across all ages and competitive levels, Hutchison said. For those interested in joining KING Aquatic Club at the new Mercer Island location, the club will hold a series of tryouts at the Mercerwood Shore Club. The first tryout session will be held at 11:30 a.m. July 14. A second tryout session will be held at 6 p.m. July 20. Additional tryout sessions will be held in August and September, Hutchinson said.

“KING Aquatic Club is well-known for our outstanding group of international-caliber athletes, but we are equally proud of our developmental and age group programs," Hutchison said. "These are the young athletes that will help our program sustain its high level of performance and contribute to USA Swimming on a national and international level. We look forward to building a complete program at Mercer Island and on the Eastside, from beginners to very accomplished swimmers."

KING Aquatic Club is recognized as one of the best swimming programs in the United States. It has been named as a Gold Medal Club for the past two years by USA Swimming's Club Excellence Program, which identifies the top swim clubs in the country. It also is the home club for former U.S. Olympians such as Megan (Quann) Jendrick as well as rising stars such as Arianna Kukors, the current national champion in two individual events.
