Texas A&M Grand Prix Packed Full of Excitement on Day One

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, June 23. OLYMPIANS and top-ranked swimmers did not disappoint tonight in College Station at the Texas A&M Grand Prix. Neil Walker, Flavia Rigamonti and Martina Moracova all blazed to the wall and set a few records.

The men's 100-meter freestyle was perhaps the highlight of the evening as 2006 NCAA champion Garrett Weber-Gale and 1997 NCAA Swimmer of the Year Neil Walker fought to a draw at 51.85. Multiple-time Olympic gold medalist Ian Crocker finished an eyelash behind his two club teammates in 51.88.

Five-time NCAA champion Flavia Rigamonti, formerly of SMU, set a new pool record of 4:14.23 in winning the 400 freestyle. The Swiss native bested the former record of 4:14.77 set by U.S. Olympian Brooke Bennett in 2004.

Two-time Olympic silver medalist Martina Moravcova of Slovakia set a new pool record of 55.30 in the women's 100 free. The old record of 55.91 was set by American Shelly Ripple-Johnston in 2004.

Mark Randall, competing unattached, set a new pool record of 3:55.32 in the men's 400 free, taking down the old mark of 3:57.11 set by Max Jaben of Kansas City Blazers in 2004.

Olympic Gold, Silver and Bronze medalist, Kirsty Coventry cruised to victory in the women's 200 backstroke, easily winning with her time of 2:17.71. While Daniel Rohleder from Longhorn aquatics claimed the men's event in 2:08.41.

14-year-old Cammile Adams from the Fleet shattered the rest of the field en route to victory in the women's 200 butterfly. She posted a time of 2:15.87 that well under the National qualifying time. Her teammate, Neil Caskey won on the men's side with a time of 2:04.00.

The meet will continue on Saturday with preliminaries scheduled for 9 a.m.
Finals will start at 6 p.m.
