Ziegler Wins 1,500 Free at Santa Clara International

SANTA CLARA, California, June 23. PREPARING for a strong showing at August's Summer Nationals, Kate Ziegler kicked off the Santa Clara International Swim Meet in strong fashion Thursday night by claiming an easy victory in the 1,500-meter freestyle. The reigning world champion in the 800 and 1,500 free events, Ziegler clocked 16:28.62 to defeat her teammate, Chloe Sutton (16:43.05). Both women train under Ray Benecki with The Fish.

Ziegler remains slated to swim the 200, 400 and 800 freestyles during the four-day meet, which concludes Sunday and features a star-studded field of American and international Olympians. Following Ziegler and Sutton was Canada's Brittany Reimer, a World champs medalist who turned in a mark of 16:48.64.

In the only men's event of the night, Ricardo Monasterio (Gator Swim Club) won the 800 freestyle with a performance of 8:09.71. Ryan Cochrane was the second-place finisher in 8:13.87 and Brian Rose took third in 8:16.67.
