International Competition Lights Up at TYR Swim Meet of Champions -- June 17, 2006

MISSION VIEJO, California, June 16. INTERNATIONAL competitors continue to light up the pool at the TYR Swim Meet of Champions hosted by the Mission Viejo Nadadores. Friday’s competition saw several fast swims and close races from swimmers across the globe as Australia and Japan battled out for many top spots.

The 100-meter freestyle was the evening’s first competition where Lacey Nymeyer from Ford Aquatics touched first with a time of 56.53. On the men's side, Eamon Sullivan from Australia was the sole finisher under the 50-second mark at 49.79. American Nick Brunelli finished second in 50.25.

Japan entered the scene in the 200 butterfly for women, where Netsuk Akiyama dominated the field to touch first in 2:11.11. Australians Josh Krogh and Nicholas Cordner battled out the men's race. At the finish it was Krogh touching first in 2:00.29 to Cordner's 2:00.66.

Japan and Australia battled it out again in the women's 200 backstroke where Meagan Ney from Australia took on Miyuk Takemura from Japan for the four lap discipline. Takemura took the event in 2:13.52 over Ney's 2:13.89.

In the 400 freestyle Australians dominated the field again, when Ashley McCleery and Stephanie Williams went 1-2. McCleery's time of 4:12.70 gave her the win. On the men's side Ous Mellouli from Trojan Swim Club dropped the hammer and blazed to a swift 3:51.99, touching out Australian Ephraim Hannant at 3:52.09.

Competition resumes on Saturday and continues on Sunday
