Mellouli, Williams Win 800 Free Races to Open TYR Meet of Champs -- June 16, 2006

MISSION VIEJO, California, June 16. THE TYR Meet of Champions kicked off Thursday night with Ous Mellouli and Steph Williams claiming victories in the 800-meter freestyles. The four-day meet runs through Sunday and its action will heat up over the next three days, thanks to a full schedule of events. The meet is a tuneup competition for August’s Summer Nationals.

On the male side, Mellouli prevailed in the 800 freestyle with a time of 8:07.68, comfortably ahead of the 8:11.82 turned in by Justin Mortimer. Mellouli, a Tunisian Olympian and medalist at last summer’s World Championships in Montreal, pulled away from Mortimer down the stretch. Chad La Tourette, a 17-year-old with vast potential, was third in 8:12.53 and was followed by Larsen Jensen, who touched the wall in 8:17.31. Expect Jensen, the American-record holder in the event, to be in the mix at Nationals.

For the women, Australia’s Steph Williams was the top finisher as she covered the 16-lap event in 8:34.75, quicker than the 8:41.54 of Japan’s Sachiko Yamada. Another Aussie, Ashley McCleery, was third in 8:44.54 and the fourth position was occupied by Adrienne Binder in 8:45.94.
