NCAA Men's Swimming: No. 3 Arizona Defeats No. 9 Michigan -- January 11, 2000

TUCSON, AZ - On the strength of three event titles by 1999 NCAA Swimmer of the Year, senior Ryk Neethling, the No. 3 ranked Arizona men's swimming and diving squad downed the ninth-ranked Michigan Wolverines Saturday at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center, by a score of 174-126. The win allowed the Wildcats to remain undefeated in dual meet action this year, as they moved to 4-0, 1-0 in the Pac-10.

Neethling captured wins in the 200 freestyle (1:54.70), 400 freestyle (4:03.06) and the 1,500 freestyle (15:43.69) as the meet was conducted in a long course meter format. Also strong for the Cats was freshman Jeff Dash who notched victories in both the 100 butterfly (56.98) and the 200 butterfly (2:03.38).

For Michigan, junior Scott Werner was also a double-event winner as he claimed titles in both of the breaststroke events. His winning time in the 100 was 1:05.18, while in the 200, he clocked a time of 2:22.86.

The Wildcat men next return to action when they travel to Berkeley, Calif. to battle the No. 5 Golden Bears on Jan. 21. Meanwhile, the No. 2 Arizona women will welcome the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs to Tucson next Friday, Jan. 14 for a battle scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
