Hayden Wins 100 Free at Zajac International

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, June 5. – BRENT Hayden of Vancouver and Erica Morningstar of Calgary each earned their third gold medal this weekend on Sunday with victories in their respective 100-meter freestyles to conclude the Bell Grand Prix/43rd Mel Zajac Jr., International swimming competition. Hayden clocked 50.04, finishing ahead of Matt Rose of Victoria in second at 51.05 and Joel Greenshields of Calgary third in 51.77.

‘’I was hoping to break my meet record tonight but still it was a solid performance,’’ said Hayden, who also won the 50 and 200 freestyles this weekend. ‘’At this point in the year I’m just looking for those types of performances and I achieved that this weekend.’’

Scott Dickens of Vancouver notched a second victory this weekend in the men’s 50 breaststroke. On the women’s side, Morningstar grabbed her third gold with a win in the 100 freestyle. Kelly Stefanyshyn of Vancouver and Mackenzie Downing of Victoria each added a second win with victories in the 100 backstroke and 200 butterfly, respectively, while Brittany Reimer won the women’s 800 freestyle.

Megan Jendrick had the top American performance as she won the 50 breaststroke in 30.91, well ahead of the 33.32 of Annamay Pierse.

100 freestyle: 1. Brent Hayden, Vancouver, 50.04; 2. Matt Rose, Victoria, 51.05; 3. Joel Greenshields, Calgary, 51.77.

200 butterfly: 1. Tamas Kerekjarto, U.S., 2:02.07; 2. Jonathan Blouin, Quebec City, 2:03.96; 3. Scott Rice, U.S., 2:05.09.

1,500 freestyle: 1. C.J. Nuess, U.S., 15:54.42; 2. Ryan Cochrane, Victoria, 16:03.25; 3. Sean Penhale, Calgary, 16:14.51.

WOMEN

50 breaststroke: 1. Megan Jendrick, U.S., 30.91; 2. Annamay Pierse, Vancouver, 33.32; 3. Liz Hendrick, Calgary, 33.49.

100 backstroke: 1. Kelly Stefanyshyn, Vancouver, 1:03.34; 2. Ariana Kukors, U.S., 1:03.51; 3. Erin Gammel, Calgary, 1:03.81.
