Aussie Coach Mark Thompson Faces 21 Counts of Sexual Abuse

SYDNEY, Australia, May 11. AFTER preliminary hearings, the man who coached Brooke Hanson to an Olympic silver medal in Athens has been charged with 21 counts of sexual abuse of a child. Mark Thompson pleaded not guilty to the charges and will stand trial in July. He allegedly committed sexual assault against one of his swimmers between 1998 and 1999.

Thompson is on leave from his position as head coach at the Nunawading Swim Club. He has been accused of assaulting a male swimmer under the age of 16. Australian magistrate Felicity Broughton ordered Thompson to face the 21 counts against him. Thompson has been alleged to have assaulted the youth both on competitive trips and in the vicinity of their training base.
