Colorado Sweeps to ASA U. National Titles

COLUMBUS, Ohio, April 25. COLORADO Swimming and Diving of the University of Colorado at Boulder swept the second annual ASA U. National Championships, coming away with the men's, women's, and overall titles. The University of Virginia was runner-up in all three categories, followed in overall scoring by the University Tennessee, Ohio State, Georgia Tech, and Northeastern, respectively.

Oliver Spees of Colorado maintained a perfect record at the meet, winning all six of his individual events: 25-yard back (11.30); 50 free (21.41); 100 back (52.87); 50 back (24.32); 25 free (10.13) and 100 free (48.20). He also took part in Colorado's sweep of the weekend's relays. Steven Costello of Georgia Tech won the men's high point award.

Katie McWilliams of UVA took home the women's high point award, having won six individual events: 500 free (5:14.53); 200 individual medley (2:16.50); 100 fly (1:02.87); 1,650 free (17:50.01); 200 free (1:59.52); 100 breast (1:10.22). Meanwhile, Melissa Scholtz of Georgia Tech had five wins: 100 back (1:02.00); 25 back (13.19); 50 breast (32.43); 25 breast (14.81); 100 IM (1:03.49).

Swimmers at ASA U. Nationals enjoyed taking advantage of the American Swimming Association's progressive rulebook that allows for non-traditional events such as the 25-yard races and features stroke rules that allow starting from the blocks on backstroke, flip-turns in all strokes, and let teams strategically select their own stroke order on medley relays.

These innovations added a new level of excitement and fun to the weekend's competition. The American Swimming Association University League is an association of student-run swim clubs from colleges and universities across the United States that enjoy the sport of swimming in a friendly, competitive environment. ASA U. was founded in response to the elimination of so many collegiate varsity swimming teams across the country.
