Hoosiers Sign Lenton

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana, April 14. INDIANA head coach Ray Looze and the Indiana University swimming and diving program announced the signing of Matt Lenton (Perth, Australia/John Septimus Roe Anglican). He joins Kevin Happ (Hunting Valley, Ohio/University School), Christopher Head (Evansville, Ind./North), Tyler McGowan (Vincennes, Ind./Lincoln), Frazier Miller (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier), Chris Oleksiak (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove), Jensen Ried (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Springs) and Drew Sease (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) as part of the incoming class of 2006.

"Matt Lenton is one of the top Australian sprinters," Looze said. "We are very pleased to add such an elite-level sprinter."

A Junior Pan Pacific gold medalist, Lenton brings a wealth of experience to the Hoosier program. A 10-time Australian age group gold medalist and 10-time State age group gold medalist, Lenton also comes to Indiana as an eight-time State Open gold medalist, seven-time State Open team member, five-time state age group team member and three-time Australian age group member. Additionally, Lenton claimed five Australian age group records, and swam for the Telstra Dolphins. Meanwhile, Lenton also competed in the 2005 Korea World Cup and the New Zealand Open in 2003 and 2004.

The 2003 Bob Bestman award winner also participated in a variety of other athletic endeavors before focusing on swimming. He helped his school to the 2003 state volleyball championship as well as the 2001 state basketball title. Furthermore, Lenton played Australia Rules Football during his time Down Under. For his efforts, Lenton picked up his school's Sportsman of the Year award from 2001-03.

"I chose Indiana because it is a great school," Lenton said. "The Hoosiers have a great staff and swim program."

Away from the athletic arena, Lenton served as a peer support team member, as well as earned the Senior Science and Modeling with Mathematics awards. Lenton also is a personal trainer.
