Exciting Swims and Famous Faces Highlight Second Day of YMCA Nationals -- April 5, 2006

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, April 5. CELEBRITY appearances and National records highlighted the second day of the YMCA National Championships. Two special guests presented awards tonight at the Nationals. Newly appointed Associate Supreme Court Justice Alito was an award presenter (his daughter swims for Lakeland hills YMCA), and former world record holder Donna de Varona presented awards (Donna’s son swims for Wilton YMCA). In the swimming excitement, a new national record was set in the men's 1000 freestyle. Future Michigan freshman, Charlie Houchin (Triangle Area YMCA) went 9:02.94 on his way to victory shattering the former record by nearly six seconds.

Other male swimmers winning tonight were Matt Donch (Triangle Area YMCA) in the men's 100 fly. Scott Thacker (Franklin YMCA) won the 200 breaststroke in 2:03.64. Kata Foder (Sarasota YMCA) won the women’s 1000 free (9:57.33) narrowly touching out Grand Forks' Hannah Whitehead (9:57.44).

Fourteen year-old Dagny Knutson (Mignot YMCA) domintated the 100 butterfly in a blistering 55.74 and Leah Ginghrich (West Shore YMCA) won the 200 freestyle is a very swift 1:49.01.

In the team competition, YMCA of the Triangle Area is winning with 387.50 points. In second sits Sarasota YMCA (268) and the M.E. Lyons Family Branch YMCA is in third with 220 points.
