YMCA Nationals to Start on Tuesday

By Mike Gobrecht

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, April 3. IN one of the final championship meets of the short course year, the YMCA Short Course Nationals begin Tuesday in Fort Lauderdale. The meet has over 1,300 swimmers entered and annually produces some great times. This year’s meet features a few swimmers that have USA National Junior Team experience including West Shore YMCA’s Leah Gingrich, and Tricia Weaner, as well as Sarasota YMCA’s Corinne Showalter on the women’s side.

On the men’s side, YMCA of the Triangle member as well as a Michigan recruit, Charlie Houchin has Junior Team experience. All four of these swimmers will be leading their respective teams in what looks to be a very tight race in the team competition. The meet also features several up-and-comers who are looking to make their way onto the national scene.

Look for Triangle’s Teresa Long to make some waves in the sprint events, as well as teammate Matt Donch, who recently broke Olympian David Fox’s 100 free state record at the North Carolina High School state meet. YMCA of the Triangle’s Eric McGinnis could make for a 1-2 finish for the team from Raleigh.
