Colgate Hosts Swimming Clinic for Special Olympians

HAMILTON, N.Y. March 25. MEMBERS of the Colgate University swimming and diving team hosted athletes from local Special Olympics clubs for a clinic on Saturday, March 25, at Lineberry Natatorium.

During the morning session, the Colgate athletes and Special Olympians participated in a series of relay races. After a break for lunch, the visiting athletes broke into groups for individualized instruction by the Colgate athletes and coaches. Four clubs from the Special Olympics’ New York central region participated in the clinic.

“This is a great opportunity for our athletes from different clubs to meet each other, interact and train together,” central region program director Jeffrey Mickle said. “It’s a wonderful time for them, and it’s a valuable experience for the students as well.”

“It was a fun day,” head coach Stephen Jungbluth. “I think our athletes felt rewarded for making a difference in someone else’s life. They got instant feedback from their care and instruction. I think it really had a positive impact on them.”

The clinic at Colgate was the first of its kind that the local Special Olympics teams have participated in this year, and Jungbluth said he would like to make it an annual event. The clubs regularly train at pools in their area, including ones at Rome Free Academy and Oswego State University.
