Men’s NCAA Div. I Championships: Cal’s Henrique Barbosa Storms from Behind to Take the 200 Breast

By Phillip Whitten

ATLANTA, Georgia, March 25. A funny thing happened to Vlad Polyakov, the Kazakhstan Kid swimming for Alabama, on his way to the victory stand. His name was Henrique Barbosa.

Sound familiar?

The University of California senior from Brazil repeated his final lap heroics that resulted in a last stroke victory in the 100 breast yesterday. Yesterday it was Indiana’s Kevin Swander who saw victory slip from his grasp. Today it was Polyakov, who seemed poised to repeat his 2005 triumph in this event.

Until Barbosa came storming down the backstretch to hit the pads first.

Barbosa’s 1:53.97 was 11-hundredths ahead of Polyakov.

Barbosa was fifth at the 50 (26.15), fifth at the 100 (55.31), fourth at the 150 (1:24.81) and first at the 200 (1:53.97). His 29.16 for the final 50 was more than a second faster than anyone else except Paul Kornfeld, who came home in 30.11 to finish third in 1:54.41.

In the battle for the team title, Arizona’s Ivan Barnes was seventh while Auburn’s Eric Shanteau finished eighth. Arizona picked up one point, to cut Auburn's lead to eight.
