Men’s NCAA Div I. Championships: Day One Team Scores and Wrap-Up

By Phillip Whitten

ATLANTA, Ga. March 23. AUBURN University took a commanding lead on Day One, relying on its depth rather than any one or two superstars. In fact, the Tigers are so deep, Coach Dave Marsh had to leave four swimmers at home, as they qualified 21 swimmers and one diver for the Championships. The NCAA limits each school to a maximum of 17 swimmers.

Despite winning only one event tonight – the 200 free relay – Auburn emerged from Day One with 178.5 points, 42 ahead of Arizona (136.5), winner of the 400 medley relay, in second. It would take a spectacular turn-around to deprive the Tigers of their fourth straight title. But as Chuck Berry once said: “You never can tell.”

Stanford, with 132 points, is breathing down Arizona’s neck while Florida is fourth (92 points) and Texas fifth (82).

Day One saw three American and NCAA marks fall, with Florida’s Ryan Lochte accounting for two of them: a 1:40.55 in the 200 IM and a 44.60 for the 100 back. Michigan’s Peter Vanderkaay accounted for the third mark with his 4:08./60 for the 500 free.
