Familiar Faces Take Awards at SPEEDO Champions Series in Annapolis

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland. March 18. THE United States Naval Academy hosted the final night of the SPEEDO Champions Series Eastern Sectional Southern Region today. Many of the meets familiar faces took to the awards stand on the last day of competition.

The 200 Butterfly was won by Emily Christy in a very fast time of 2:00.98. On the Men's side, Fiftten-year-old Doug Dietrich from MLAC went 1:51.32 on his way to victory.

The sprint freestyle events were both won by Anne Marie Botek on the women's side. Her time's of 22.88 and 50.45 were good enough for gold. The 50 freestyle for the men was won by Ray Toomey in 21.25. The 100 freestyle was taken by Joe Smutz from NAVY in 46.17.

Sam Gelb also claimed two more victories over the weekend, claiming the 200 breaststroke in 2:17.46, and then winnin the 200 Individual Medley with a swift 2:05.46. Michael Polino won the breaststroke for the Men with his time of 2:05.41.

In men's 100 backstroke, Michael Gray from Maverick battled out Billy Vey for the victory by a mere 2 tenths of a second. Gray's time of 52.26 ousted Vey's 52.46 at the wall. For the women, Megan Steeves took the gold with a 56.96.

Josef Kinderwater won two more events in two days. He took first in the 500 freestyle and then the 1650 on Sunday. His times of 4:33.46 and 15:29.40 obliterated the rest of the field by several seconds. Amilee Smith won the 500 free for the women with a 4:52.11. Kimberly Case won the 1000 in 10:09.26.

The 200 backstroke saw Genny Szymanski touch the wall first for the women in 2:02.87, while Kevin Spath took home gold with a 1:52.19.

The men's 200 I.M. highlighted the last night of the competition as Austin Surhoff and Stephen Kustra raced to the finish. Surhoff won in 1:56.22 over Kustra's 1:56.35.
