Emory Owns Lead at Division III Women’s Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, March 10. EMORY University claimed the second-day lead at the NCAA Division III Women’s Championships on Friday night, due to a 311-point performance that left it ahead of Kenyon (274) and Williams (191). Kenyon was hurt by a disqualification in the 800 freestyle relay.

Calvin College’s Becky Weima set the only Division III record of the second night of action as she covered the 200 freestyle in 1:49.02, under the 1:49.09 posted by Carleton’s Marie Marsman in 2003. Meanwhile, Williams’ Lindsay Payne crushed the opposition in the 100 breaststroke as she managed a swim of 1:01.41. The effort supplied nearly a two-second triumph, but Payne was off her divisional record of 1:00.54.

Kenyon claimed first place in the 200 medley relay when the quartet of Brittany Hurd, Jessica Connors, Laila Gagnon and Elizabeth Carlton notched an effort of 1:44.95. Kaitlyn Orstein of Washington & Jefferson bested the field in the 400 I.M. (4:24.51) and Whitworth’s Samantha Kephart won the 100 butterfly in 55.45. Amherst’s squad of Julie Kim, Brittany Sasser, Margaret Ramsey and Meaghan Stern won the 800 free relay in 7:33.61.
