Lavoie Named Canada’s Mission Head for 2007 World Champs

OTTAWA, Ontario, Canada, February 10. THE Aquatic Federation of Canada (AFC) has announced the appointment of Claude Lavoie as Chef de Mission, Canada, for the 12th FINA World Aquatic Championships, scheduled for March 18-31, 2007 in Melbourne, Australia.

“We are delighted to have Claude Lavoie lead the charge for Team Canada at the 2007 FINA World Championships," said Linda Cuthbert, President of the Aquatic Federation of Canada. “His extensive experience as a team manager, coach, and volunteer in the Canadian Aquatic community, in addition to his enthusiasm and commitment, will ensure a successful mission for Canada.”

As coach of Canada’s first women’s water polo team, Lavoie participated in the 1978 World Championships in Berlin, the 1982 World Championships in Guyaquil, as well as many FINA Cup tournaments. Lavoie was most recently a member of the Board of Directors for the 2005 FINA World Championships in Montreal and it was this experience that inspired him to apply to lead the Canadian team in 2007.

“During the Championships in Montreal, I rediscovered our athletes’ intensity which had, in the past, given me so much pleasure,” said Lavoie. “It will be an honor to manage the affairs for the aquatic teams in 2007 and build on the success we experienced in Montreal.”

In addition to his experience coaching and managing teams, Lavoie has been a long term administrative volunteer in the aquatics community including terms as President of Water Polo Canada and President of the Aquatic Federation of Canada.
