IUPUI’s Wheeler Earns Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana. February, 1. IUPUI swimmer Brian Wheeler (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) has been selected Mid-Continent Conference Athlete of the Week for men’s swimming. This is the third time in his career that Wheeler has earned the honor.

Wheeler has been on a tear the past several weeks, winning five of his past six races. The past two dual meets have included Mid-Con foes South Dakota State and Eastern Illinois. Wheeler was awarded this recognition for taking first place in three races in a dual meet with EIU this past Thursday.

The 5-foot-10 junior dominated all three events, winning by impressive margins in each. His winning time of 10:04.88 in the 1000 freestyle was 7.11 seconds ahead of the rest of the field and was the eighth-fastest time in school history in the event. He splashed to a team season-best time of 4:52.62 in the 500 freestyle, besting the other competitors by 5.21 seconds.

In addition, Wheeler clocked a 1:57.28 in taking first in the 200 butterfly. That was the fastest time by an IUPUI swimmer this year, fourth-quickest time in IUPUI history and more than six seconds out in front of everyone else.

Wheeler is a member of the 800 freestyle relay team that set the school record in the House of Champions meet last February. Wheeler ranks second on the IUPUI career wins list with 28 and stands sixth in podium finishes with 53.
