Slippery Rock Axes Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Water Polo, Three Other Teams

By Phillip Whitten

January 31. WHILE the USOC sits on a report issued last September by the joint NCAA/USOC Task Force on endangered Olympic sports, these programs keep slip-sliding away.

Last month Tulane University dropped eight athletic teams, most of them Olympic sports. Now Slippery Rock has followed suit, announcing today it, too, is axing eight sports — five men's teams and three women's — in an effort to save some $350,000.

Among the victims: men's and women's swimming, men's and women's water polo, men's wrestling, tennis and golf and women's field hockey. In all, the cuts impact 122 athletes.

The cuts will take effect when the 2005-06 academic year ends this spring.
